Last known location: Yavapai campground in Granite Basin, located within the Prescott National Forest in Arizona.
Search Hike Details: Arrived for the hike at 0700 on 4/24/26. Volunteer group consisted of around 15 individuals. Headed north west from trail head into the wilderness. Most searching was consistent 2 person groups through heavy brush and terrain. Terrain includes granite boulders that have also create smaller talus caves. Searched over 7 miles of terrain with a lot of crawling and tough hiking.
Overall Esqueleto Consensus: Mr. Stambaugh's final resting place is most likely going to be in one of the hundreds to thousands of small openings created by the granite boulders in the region. Mr. Staumbaugh was known to go off trail and climb rocks in order to enjoy views; he was also quite familiar with the area which lends credence to the idea that he did indeed go off trail. If I had to venture a guess, I would say that the upper ridgelines due west and northwest of the Metatite trail head are the best places to next cover. Something else to also note is with the amount of time that has passed all searches are looking for bones and other clues, not a body, and bones move from time to time (animals, settling etc) so its important to remember that when (and I do say when because I highly believe Mr. Stambaugh will be found) something is indeed found I do not believe it will be as a whole skeleton and maybe a bit away from where he actually came to rest.
